This weekend was a bad studying weekend. There was hiking and FIFA and … well, really need I say more?
Onwards to the picture portion of our post today!
The fog rolled out on Friday and left me with a beautiful view after class.
Dinner was an individualized egg quiche on a bed of rockets, while watching the game.
Sticking with our “while watching the game” theme – we had pancakes the next day
We biked down to the Farmer’s Market after the game, in time to see what an $8 avocado looked like (spoiler alert: Big. It looked Big.)
And while down near the water, we walked around a bit and enjoyed the view.
The rest of Saturday was spent doing errands and trying not to freak out about the Games.
Then Sunday we went up to Big Bear Lake for a hike.
LOVE this place. LOVE.
And here comes our Instagram-enabled 1977 filter part of the weekend. (I couldn’t help myself)
Big Bear Lake is awesome – it is about 7000 ft up, surrounded by the lush San Bernardino National Forest, and chock full of trails, water activities and wonderful locals to help you figure out where to explore.
We chose the Wilderness circuit – a loop around the forest on the north shore
With views like this!
… and trees like this!
The trees look painted, they’re so beautiful.
The trail has these posts you can look to your guidebook for explanation of various flora and fauna.
I climbed these. Slowly and very carefully. But I did.
Woodpeckers holes galore!
Can you even?
The bark is around 6″ thick – this is an adaptation particular to these pines that allows them to save themselves from occasional fires (the thick bark protecting the vital insides of the tree from the heat). The branches are also very high – the lower ones fall off – in order to stave off catching fire from the forest floor.
The Boy climbed these. I was too scared. There was a little post warning about rattle snakes.
I can’t even express how beautiful this place is. It reminded me a little of home – rural Ontario, particularly rural Northern Ontario, but with even more wild vegetation. Oh, and salamanders everywhere.
Big Bear Lake.
Me and BBL
On our way down, back to sea level, we stopped and took a last picture or two.
Back in SaMo. At my new favourite coffee place.
Sunday was a day for beautiful things.
And some light dinner nibbles for the night.
How was your weekend?
